The 2012 FLW Everstart Western Series has ended at beautiful Clear Lake in northern California. Throughout the five days of practice we were greeted with great weather and calm water. All through practice I found fish locked on beds all over the lake so I decided even with the approaching cold storm that I was going to stick with sight fishing.
The first day of competition the storm moved in as expected with rain and high winds but I went to some protected areas first thing in the morning and with the help of my Lowrance HD units and my Blade Runner Jig I located some quality bed fish under cloudy, rainy skies. I caught most of my 20lbs 13ozs on drop shotting a Basstrix Baitfry. With the west winds continuing to build throughout the day it made for an interesting ride back to the launch area but my TOP THIS Phoenix 721 Pro XP powered by my Mercury Pro XS 250 handled it extremely well.
Day two the skies cleared and the wind died down a little allowing me to fish some areas that were not fish-able the first day. With the same baits I was able to weigh in 21lbs 11ozs to finish in 13th place just missing the cut by 1lb 3ozs, unfortunately I did drop two fish in the 5lb class range that either one would have had me fishing on Saturday but I’m sure that other guys have that same fish stories,..
Although it has not been that great of a year for me in the FLW Western Series, I still managed a 19th place overall points finish. Considering my finishes I’ll take it!
